The iconic New Balance 991 sneaker, which turns 20 years old, was first released in 2001. It was the first model to feature an ABZORB insert in both the forefoot and heel, thanks to its newly enhanced midsole design.
The designer’s variation and revisitation in this project at first glance strikes me with the aesthetic part on the more futuristic and youthful design on the new generations; With the elimination of the traditional flat lace and the addition of a dynamic part for a more comfortable fit, combined with the strap on the instep with the logo engraved on it. Thus eliminating the traditional and historic logo on the side of the sewn N and changing its position.
Even the redesign with the addition inside the shoe, of a fabric that acts as a sock to the foot, makes it particular and pleasant on the aesthetic side, with a technical/stylistic influence and comfortable utility/convenience. The sole has been revisited with a two-piece mold, front and back, and not the classic single piece of sole, while maintaining the same design and reliefs.
I find in the final line the project of such a legendary model, well studied and perfectly revisited by the Designer; Keeping unchanged the ABZORB inserts on the heel and forefoot, which absorb the impact through a combination of shock absorption and resistance to compression, which are the main feature of this model.
I am happy that this technical function has not been eliminated and I really appreciated the entire restyling project!
